TT winner comes to RDSF

The bike that Charlie shall ride in the Festival in is 1974 Maxton Yamaha. He used this bike to finish 2nd in Irelands North West 200 and 2nd in both the Senior and Classic TT's of that year.

Motorbike racing legend Charlie Williams started racing as sidecar passenger in 1969 and had his first solo race on a Matchless G50 at Snetterton later that year.

His first race in the Isle of Man was in the Manx GP in 1970 in the 250 Lightweight class where he finished 5th and claimed Best Newcomer. The following year he won.

This was the start of his TT career. Charlie’s first TT was in 1972 and in 1973 he had his first TT win. This was one of 9 wins - 5 x 250cc, 1 x 350cc, 1 x Formula 2, 1 x 250cc Production, 1 x 500cc production - in total he had 21 TT podium finishes.

Charlie’s last TT was in 1984 but he made a comeback in Classic TT 30 years later in 2014 on a ‘Works’ Norton finishing 9th overall but 1st in class - yet another TT win!

He also raced for Honda in Endurance between 1973 – 1978, winning Spa and Barcelona 24 hours, Nurburgring 8 hours, Zaandvort 6 hours; and was runner up in the Coupe D'endurance championship twice.

Charlie’s last race was at Goodwood in March this year on his Maxton Yamaha - this is the bike Charlie will bring up to RDSF in August.
